So they got a loaner. Also, if you know anyone with a 2nd gen MDX — or ZDX — with under 125k miles, tell them to get an oil consumption t est at the dealer ASAP. My parents had 122k.

Next step: Keep it from happening again. I assume this is the same issue related to VCM and oil consumption, Either way, killing VCM makes the car soooo much smoother, especially when getting on-and-off the power:

Mrs. addiction’s ‘14 is at about 140k. So I’m screwed?

The hubris. You can’t control oil, it does what it wants.

I’m sure if you complain enough, it could work out.

Wow, great writeup. I’m trying to talk my dad into it. I don’t think we had your fluctuating cruise control problem, we’ll look at it closer

In my case, it escapes and returns to the earth as intended , which includes my garage floor.

Amateurs, my Subaru was burning 1qt/1,000 miles at 25,000 miles on the odometer. I’ll be surprised if it makes it to 100k without needing another engine.

It affects the TL too (2009 - 2014).

This issue is related to the oil control ring on the piston, updated rings and pistons are the fix.

Most people would never really notice it, 3-4mph fluctuations are pretty common. But once they’re gone, it’s beautiful.

My confusion — I saw “piston rings” and “oil consumption” and it immediately triggered me ;)

I never got a letter. Wonder if mine’s a late ‘14 and not included?

I found this for the 2014. Google:

“american honda (ahm) is investigating certain 2010-2013 mdxs, 2011-2012 rls, 2009-2014 shawd tls & 2010-2013 zdxs with a client complaint of higher than expected engine oil consumption”
Thanks - ‘14 not listed here, so I think we’re good.

The NHTSA link - see my edit - puts the whole year range for all in the subject line, but clarifies below.

I see, I see.
Well, I hope it's fine! My dad's had two MDXs... The last one Acura replaced the transmission for free, this one he's getting new rings. You're in good hands! Probably.

Seems like Honda’s reliability issues mostly trace to heavy V6-powered cars.
Glad theirs is getting taken care of.

Haha - we put 25k per year on her car, so if we get a couple more years out of it, I’ll be happy.

Love the color of the loaner

I had this done at 101,xxx. New pistons, rings, timing belt, spark plugs, valve cover gaskets. They had to also replace the camshaft also since it got flat spotted from low oil.

Also, Honda USA is only covering full repair cost until September of 2019. Anytime after that, you are on your own...
